Overview of Files and Folders in Rails

This video provides an overview of the key files and folders in a Ruby on Rails application, including the app, config, db, and log directories, along with their roles in managing MVC logic, configurations, database structure, and application logs.

Now that we have established that, I'm just going to give you an overview of all 0:04
of these files and folders in the Rails application. 0:07
So, the app folder is the heart of the application where the model view 0:09
controller logic resides. 0:12
The models folder handles business logic and database interactions. 0:14
The controllers folder processes requests and manages application logic. 0:17
And then, the views folder has templates for rendering the user interface. 0:21
This is where you have your html.erb files, 0:24
which are essentially HTML files that allow Ruby code inside of them. 0:26
Then you've got the config folder. 0:30
The config folder manages the application configuration. 0:31
The routes.rb file is extremely important, it defines URL routes and 0:33
their corresponding controller actions. 0:36
As I mentioned, the controllers are in the app folder. 0:38
The database.yml configures database connections. 0:41
And then, if we go to environments/development.rb, 0:43
this one has environment specific settings, so if you're in development or 0:45
production or test, it has different settings. 0:49
The third most important folder is db folder, 0:51
this handles the database structure and data, we'll get into that more later. 0:53
Then the fourth most important one is called the Gemfile, and 0:56
this lists the RubyGems or the libraries the application actually depends on. 0:59
So, example, we have a gem Rails, and Rails is actually a Gem itself, 1:02
even though it's a framework. 1:05
So all of these gems are in RubyGems, 1:07
which is an online website where you can download the gems. 1:08
And then finally, the log folder has all of the logs. 1:11
So if you go to development log, as you can see, we have all of the logs 1:14
in the application since it has been born, I guess you could say. 1:17
So that's just what's in the server now. 1:20
But let's say you stop the server, turn off your PC and restart, 1:21
you can go back to the logs and see what went wrong. 1:24
