every place represents a power of 2, starting at 2 to power of zero.

0001 = 0 times 8, 0 times 4, 0 times 2, 0 times 1. so 1.

1111 = 1 times 8, 1 times 4, 1 times 2, 1 times 1. so 15.

1010 = 1 times 8, 0 times 4, 1 times 2, 0 times 1. so 10.

(I only used 4 bits, but the process remains the same when using 8 bits to make up a byte)
