This is a great question! For HTML5 one would use a Doctype declaration of:

<!DOCTYPE html> 

There are other declarations available, depending upon the document you are creating. Here is a partial list of valid Doctypes.

Spelling matters and you will need to put your Doctype declaration before your opening tag, for example:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>

    <!--
        Your amazing code goes here.
    !-->

</html>
