after checking work, i keep getting a "type specifier error on my printf line of code. I cannot figure out how to fix this

That's strange! The challenge doesn't ask you to print out the result, merely to write the function.

Keep in mind we declare a function like this:

return type functionName(parameter one, parameter two) {

}

The things the function does go within those curly braces. In our case, we want to add up two floats. So you could return your first parameter + your second parameter.
