Am I understanding <img srcset=''> properly?

In <img src = 'name.jpg; srcset = 'name-1x.jpg,name-2x.jpg, name-3x.jpg' ./> I know that browsers would pick the appropriate image for the user's screen retina or pixels per inch.

But what's the difference between the 'w' descriptor and 'x' descriptor? Isn't it basically the same thing?
