Are spaces between variables/math problems necessary?

I've noticed that when Kenneth creates a variable, he'll use a space on either side of the equal sign (ex. name = "Kenneth"). Similarly, when adding integers he will put a space on either side of the addition sign (5 + 5). When I leave the space(s) out (name="Kenneth"; 5+5), I get the same result that he does. Is there a reason for leaving these spaces? Thanks!

The spaces are not technically necessary, but they are considered a "best practice" and make the code more readable.
