^[^@]+@[^@.]+\.[a-z]+$ accepts special characters such as !, {, +, etc. Why not use ^\w+@\w+\.[a-z]+$ instead ?

Hi guys, I noticed that ^[^@]+@[^@.]+.[a-z]+$ accepts special characters such as !, { etc, before the @ symbol while testing. Does it mean that some email addresses can contains contains special characters before the @ symbol ?

The "local-part" of an email address is allowed to contain nearly any printable character. For more details, see this Wikipedia page.
