BASE_URL vs ROOT_PATH

Hello :) I do not really see the differtnce between those ...For me they point to the same place on the server... Can somebody explain this to me? Thanks :)

Thank you for your reply Richard... To me it seems that both base_url and rootpath contain the same information... What am i missing? Can you tell?
