being stick for a long time

every thing goes well except when the variable is not a string neither a number, that is ,when i run squared(k), it comes out NameError: name 'k' is not defined. whatever i do ,the problem is always there~''~ plz help

def squared(arg):
    try:
        int(arg)
    except ValueError:
        return len(arg)*arg
    else:
        return(int(arg)*int(arg))
