Best Practice for Testing AJAX Project Prototypes

Let's say I'm building an APP that needs to GET JSON from a third party API. What is the best way to test this locally, without having to load the files onto my domain host? I've used XAMPP for testing PHP on a local server, so I'm curious if there is something similar I could use for AJAX calls
