I'm going to try to answer this as best as I can with just the CSS that you've shown.

For the bullet points to disappear, you need to actually select the ul element. Just selecting the #gallery isn't enough. You have to do the following:

#gallery ul {
    list-style: none;
}

As for the images, in order for them to stack side by side, you'd have to apply a float property to them. You would also have to apply some kind of width to them as well. Assuming you haven't applied any margins to the images, you can assign a 50% width to them to make a very easy 2-image-wide gallery.

    float: left;
}

I'm not sure what you mean by the background color text problem. You'd have to clarify on that one.

I got rid of the same problem you had by adding this css code to main.css on the page portfolio section.
