i do not understand what i am supposed to be doing in this section. Any help would be greatly appreciated

you changed a few things from the previous tasks that didnt need to be changed. you have the right idea, it looks like you just misread the instructions a bit possibly.

add the $flavor variable back to the top. set it to be cookie dough.

<?php
$flavor = "cookie dough"

you need to echo the flavor variable after the your favorite flavor of ice cream is paragraph. 

echo "<p>Your favorite flavor of ice cream is ";
echo "$flavor
echo ".</p>";

check if $flavor is equal to cookie dough, not vanilla. and the string in the if statement needs to be "<p>Randy's favorite flavor is cookie dough, also!</p>"

if ($flavor == "cookie dough") {
echo "<p>Randy's favorite flavor is cookie dough, also!</p>";
}

after fixing those changes you end up with

$flavor = "cookie dough"
echo "<p>Your favorite flavor of ice cream is ";
echo "$flavor
echo ".</p>";

if ($flavor == "cookie dough") {
echo "<p>Randy's favorite flavor is cookie dough, also!</p>";
}
