Can anyone explain why we are changing "@+id/listView1" to "@android:id/list"?

Bonus points if you can tell me why we change extends ActionBarActivity to ListActivity

It needs to be set an unique ID for your listview to gain access to it.

Bonus: extending the ActionBarActivity gives you the ActionBars functionality on every API level >= 7 by extending ListActivity you can avoid adding additional projects/libraries to your project but you'll lack the ActionBar on api levels below 11
