can I do the below with the list named things if (things[0] != 'a'): print ("HI")

the interpreter says there is a syntax error

breaks.py
def loopy(items):
    # Code goes here
  for things in items:
    if (things = 'a'):
      continue
    else:
       print (things)

To do the comparison you need to use ==. Also, instead of comparing things with 'a' you nned to compare the item at index 0 of things with 'a':

if (things[0] == 'a'):
