Can i just keep using the same "var guess" for the entire code rather than creating a new variable?

i found it easier as it gives the same results or am i missing something?

Yes, you are correct. This is an improvement, since using the same variable has the same result without spending unnecessary memory space by adding more variables. Perhaps the instructor added those 2 new variables because it's easier to read and comprehend for beginners, you however took it a step forward in terms of optimization. Great observation!

In addition to making it easier to understand, creating new variables also makes it less obvious that the outer IF block and the nested IF blocks repeat the same block of code, i.e.

if (parseInt(guess) === randomNumber){
correctGuess = true;
}
