This is a pretty good book. It looks like the 2nd edition is in the works. At least checkout it out and see if it looks like something you're interested in. Android Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide

When I was doing some android and java I learned a lot about java from Thinking in Java. It can get pretty advanced and its not a super easy introduction to it, but goes into detail in how it works.

Those are my two opinions, but everyone has a different learning style so its possible they may not be what you're looking for. :)
