cannot convert .ai or .png images to .svg

I have followed the exact steps to save .png and .ai files to svg's (not rocket science, I know) but every time it seems to save as an entire page rather than a single image. The links then don't work at all when I put them into the website. Have I got some kind of setting wrong on illustrator? Please help!

If you are still seeking a solution to this, you'll need to be a bit more specific, it's hard to imagine what the problem is exactly. Are you sure the svg isn't just loading up in a web browser? Because by default that is how my computer loads up SVGs, it's still an SVG file, just using the browser to display it. If that were the case, the links might not be working due to a sizing issue.

If not you might have better luck asking over on http://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/ or wherever it is that graphic designers hang out online.
