I cannot get the images to align side by side

I have also set the max-width to 100%

You are missing an ID or Class on your unordered list. It should be:

<ul id="gallery">
  <li>List item</li>
</ul>

Also, in your CSS you would need to put a # before gallery and gallery li.

#gallery {
  margin: 0; 
  padding: 0; 
  list-style: none;
}

#gallery li {
  float: left; 
  width: 45%;
  margin: 2.5%; 
  background-color: #f5f5f5; 
  color: #bdc3c7;

Next time for quicker response you can use codepen as well, or you can use and add css, html, javascript, obj-c etc.. so its like (html) without the braces and attached. And closing it as well. And no asterx use this ` x3 and write e.g html and close it with x3
