centering a margin using css

is this not the way you center a margin within the wrapper?

wrapper {

    max-width: 940px;
    margin: 0 auto;

}

Yes, but you should have a hash symbol to select the div.

#wrapper {
  width: 940px;
  margin: 0 auto;
