Changing the function and parameter names

I still don't get why did we change the function and parameter names

At about 5:50 in the video, Dave explains that he wants to create names that are "a little bit more accurate".

I think it's safe to assume he means names that more accurately reflect what the function does and what the argument will contain.

But the old names were suitable too also I didn't get "a column as an item in an array and a row as an array that's in the major array" can you please explain.
