I don't really understand what I'm doing wrong in this challenge. I'm supposed to be adding these strings together, which I am doing with '+', but it is saying that I am changing the variable.
var id = "23188xtr";
var lastName = "Smith";
var userName = id.toUpperCase();
'userName#' + 'lastName'.toUpperCase();

would return
#LASTNAME
This is because the quotes are defining a string and not using the variable name.

var userName = id.toUpperCase() + '#' + lastName.toUpperCase();

Full Stack JavaScript Techdegree Student 2,585 PointsThanks Dale, I really appreciate it. Could you answer one more question? I just wanted to know why I had to add the '#' in quotes by itself and not grouped along with the string '#lastName'.toUpperCase();
