code challenge problem

I am having trouble with this code challenge in knowing how to assign the return value of a function to a variable. My error message that I am getting is below.

Bummer! You didn't assign the return value from the getYear() function to the yearToday variable.

script.js
function getYear() {
var year = new Date().getFullYear();
  return year;
}
getYear();
var yearToday
index.html

<body>
<script src="script.js"></script>
</body>
</html>

Replace last two lines with:

var yearToday = getYear();

This way, when you call the function it will return the year and assign it to the newly created var "yearToday"

You're calling the method, then creating the variable afterward.

You want to create the variable, then assign the response of the method right to it.

var whatever = someFunction();

If you call someFunction() by itself, it'll return something, it just won't assign it to anything, and it'll vanish into the ether.

Then when you create a variable, you've got a variable, but.... it's not holding anything.
