CODE NOT WORKING

in my text editor i get error invalid syntax at zz+=1 maybe something is wrong with the while

wordcount.py 
# E.g. word_count("I do not like it Sam I Am") gets back a dictionary like:

        while(zz != len(y)):
            if letter == y[zz]:

            zz+=1       

    return dctn
