Code will not pass challenge?

Why will this code not pass?

var userName = id.toUpperCase(); userName =+ "#"; userName =+ lastName.toUpperCase();

But this code will?

var userName = id.toUpperCase() + "#" + lastName.toUpperCase();

They do exactly the same thing?

Joe,

Check your punctuation: you have "=+" when that operator is supposed to be "+=".

Hello Joe,

Your first line will pass if you change the compound addition operator syntax to "+=" instead of "=+". Flip those around and try the challenge again.

I hope this helps.
