How do I change the color of the h1 tag to purple

You selected your h1 tag wrong, it's not valid css. You should select your h1 tag as follow:

h1 { color: purple; }

In style.css file, first you need to select the h1 element then you open a set of curly brackets and then you define properties between the brackets:

h1 {
    color: purple;
}
