Ruby Ruby Modules Include and Extend Extend

Confused about the instances method

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around pushing to the instances METHOD rather than a variable. It seems like it should be @instances.push(object) (pushing to the array itself) but instead it seems to be calling the push method on the instances method. How is this working?

I have the same question too. Is it because when extending module, one cannot use the initialize method to initialize the instance variable @instances and so one have to put it in a method and use the method instead?
