you have two problems in your statement: Firstly you forgot to use the FROM keyword with the table you want to select the data from (in this case it's called books). Secondly you have to count all the rows, not genre.
It should look like this in the end:
SELECT genre, count(*) AS genre_count FROM books GROUP BY genre;
