What I did was var player = "jasmine"; because I was under the impression that string is whatever is in the "" correct? but it says I got it wrong

You pretty much have it - your code is valid, it just isn't exactly what the challenge directions ask for. The challenge asks for "Jasmine", but you're storing "jasmine". If you capitalize the 'J', you should pass. Your understanding of strings is exactly right - it'll store whatever is inside the quotes. Just have to watch those sneaky challenge directions!
