The above worked for me, though it was rejected here.
def first_and_last(item):
first4 = item[:4]
last4 = item[-4:]
result = sum(first4) + sum(last4)
return result

The method is called first_and_last_4
- you missed the end off.
Also, you've done the slices correctly but then used sum()
which isn't required. Just use the slices you defined, add them together an return them:
def first_and_last_4(item):
return item[:4] + item[-4:]
