Delete item from list

I have to delete the '8' in the list. I have tried the following on my console and it works a charm. For some reason, it is not going through here. Help?

lists.py 
messy = [5, 2, 8, 1, 3]
del messy [2]

Remove the space between messy and the []... For some reason the checker dosent like it

messy = [5, 2, 8, 1, 3]
del messy [2]

I agree that it should work... maybe try if other operations work? The .pop() method, for instance?
