Does anyone else get a white box when attempting to merge the objects together?

In this video, Mat merges the objects together on the background. When I attempt to do the same, the white rectangle that I used behind the icon to create the clipping mask shows and I can't seem to hide it. Mat doesn't have this issue and I'm just wondering what I'm doing wrong with mine?

Also, I have CS5.5 and the colours from the video can't be imported because they were created in CS6. Can anyone please provide the hex colours so I can re-create?

Hey James, Did you expand the the items in the document before you tried to merge? That may be why your mask area is switching to white. See video at 4:25. Also, be sure you're clicking Merge and not Unite.
