Don't know what's wrong

I don't know what's wrong here. It's probably something simple since I don't really have a perfect understanding of AJAX, but help would be appreciated.

You should add the request outside of the function

var request = new XMLHttpRequest();
request.onreadystatechange = function () {
  if (request.readyState === 4) {
    document.getElementById("footer").innerHTML = request.responseText;
  }
};

request.open("GET", "footer.html");

Oh lol I thought the end of the function was outside the if brackets but I was still in the function
