Error while trying to import a database to my local machine

I'm trying to import a database of an existing live site that I maintain for a friend. I exported the database on the remote phpAdmine, downloaded the .sql file, and imported it on my local phpAdmin. I got the folllowing error message: "You probably tried to upload a file that is too large. Please refer to documentation for a workaround for this limit." Any idea why? and what can I do to overcome this?
