Finally, add a # symbol and lastName in uppercase to the end of the userName string. The final value of userName is "231

Can someone explain please?

It's important to not remove any of the code originally provided. In particular, you'll need the "lastName" variable to be able to complete task 2.

Okay thanks, I've added that back. What's the next step? Seriously struggling to understand this question so would appreciate some guidance with this.

For task 2, you'll convert the case of the last name the same way you did for the ID, but also join the strings together (along with a "#" symbol) using concatenation.
