Here's my solution to the challenge:

def add (num1, num2):      # <--- get two parameters
  try:
    return float(num1) + float(num2) # <-- return the parameters if they can convert to floats
  except ValueError:
    return None # <-- if they can't be converted return None
  else:
    return num1 + num2 # <-- return the original parameters added or concatenated depending on datatype

Hope this helps!

With your solution you need to pass in parameters not arguments, this means creating something like a variable in the brackets. Not using actual numbers.

To convert you need to use this syntax:

float(item)    # <-- use this one
