Now it tells me to add an # symbol and the variable lastName "Smith" for which I use the following code:
var userName = id.toUpperCase(); +"#"
However when I try to use any other code to add the var lastName it shows that doing something wrong any suggestions?

16,500 PointsYou are ending your statement with a semi-colon after your .toUpperCase() method. In the instance that you use concatanation to build your variables, any method/function calls need the semi colon removed. Like so.
var id = "23188xtr";
var lastName = "Smith";
var userName = id.toUpperCase() + '#' + lastName.toUpperCase();
notice on the id method, I didn't use a semi-colon, because that ENDs the statement. :)
You're on the right track though!
