Grid in the middle is missing for me

The middle of my screen doesn't have a grid—it's just blank. And I thought it would show if I moved something onto the screen but that didn't change anything. I'm using a Mac (if that helps).

Without the actual code, really hard to help you. But, from what I know about grids, they will collapse if they don't have content, so you may have a grid that doesn't appear to be there, as it has collapsed to a line. Have you tried the Grid part of the Layout tab under the Inspector Tool in Firefox?
