Have 8 notifications, can only see last 4

Okay,

Something happened, something changed. I have 8 notifications, however I can only see the last 4. I can't scroll the notifications list, it scrolls the page instead.

Macbook Pro 13", OSX Yosemite, Chrome 53.0.2785.143

Hey Kevin,

Are you talking about when you click the bell icon?

I've noticed it too for a few days now and I think it must be a recent update. It used to have it's own scroll bar but now it takes up full height and its fixed to the page.

I'm not sure who to tag. Maybe Jay Padzensky or Rob Allessi ?

In the meantime you should be able to click the "Notifications" link to see your full list.

Or make sure you don't get more than 4 behind :)

Ha, yep, that's exactly the problem Jason!

Jennifer Nordell just told me about the separate notifications list, that at least solves this for now. And I try not, lol but I had a new course, answer request, and a thread that went super popular. 8 is not a norm for me ;)

Are either of you experiencing delays between emails and notifications?

I'm getting emails right away but notifications can take a few hours to come in. This has been happening for maybe a couple weeks now.

Jason Anello Yes, in fact, I received this email and replied. But I do not, as of now, have a notification from Treehouse regarding this thread at all. To be honest, I mostly rely on my email to keep me up-to-date.

That being said, on occasion I also have something where it notifies me. Then says I have notifications. I go and look but it's the same notification I looked at 3 minutes ago. It's like it's not being cleared even though I have viewed the thread and every comment etc there.

Same here. I don't have the notifications for this thread.

I do rely on my email more too because there doesn't seem to be a way to manage notifications.

I might have had the repeat notifications problem but I'm not sure.

Hey folks, thanks for the heads up!

To summarize:

  1. When notifications are revealed, the number of them does not match up with number on the notification bell icon
  2. Notifications do not scroll; only the page you're on scrolls.
  3. In-app notifications appear delayed; email notifications are immediate as expected
  4. Repeat in-app notifications

Are all of you experiencing all of the above? As always, OS/browser/devices are always appreciated. Thank to all of you very much!

Hi Jay,

I'm on win8 and firefox.

  1. It's not that the numbers don't match up but rather we can't see them. They're there but off the bottom of our screen. Kevin could only see 4 on his 13" screen. On my smallish desktop screen I can see 7. This morning, 10 notifications came in from yesterday. I could see 7 and the other 3 would have been off the bottom of my viewport but they are there.
The old styling had the notifications dropdown set to a height of about 300 to 400px and it had its own scrollbar. So maybe we could only see 3 or 4, but then we could scroll to see the rest of them. It was fixed to the page as well if I remember right.

  2. Yes

  3. Yes, the amount of delay varies. The notification for your answer here came within 35 minutes. Others can be several hours.

  4. I can't recall if I had this problem or not.

Hi Jay,

A little about my systems. I use Safari on both iOS 10.0.2 and macOS 10.12. I also have an Ubuntu system using Firefox. My Windows 10 system uses Firefox and Chrome. To be fair, I haven't checked this on Edge as I'm not a fan. The problem I'm talking about is pervasive across devices and browsers. My display is 21" with a resolution of 1920 x 1080.

  1. I can confirm that it's not that the numbers don't match up. This is not a problem to my knowledge.

  2. I'm in agreement with Jason Anello. I believe I remember a time when clicking on the notification "bell" I would be given a popup that had a scrollbar on it so that I could scroll through the notifications. Now the popup simply extends down the screen and when trying to scroll, it scrolls the page instead of the notifications. The only way to see all the notifications is to click twice on the "Notifications" title on the popup which redirects me to the notifications page. There, I can view all notifications in pages.

  3. Yes, in-app notifications are delayed as opposed to email. Email seems almost immediate. In-app notifications can be delayed by up to 15 minutes or more.

  4. Once I get the notification and view the event it's speaking of, I will sometimes see my notification "bell" light up as if I have a new notification. However, when I look, it's the same event I just viewed several minutes ago. I look, and there's been no new activity. This removes the notification marking on the "bell". But sometimes this will happen repeatedly so that it looks like I constantly have new notifications even though no new activity has occurred. Also, no new emails will come in during this time (unless they specifically address another thread, of course).

Thanks for your time, Jay!

Hi Jay,

Much like Jason and Jennifier,

  1. I believe the number of notifications do match the number on the bell. However - I just experienced something tonight. while on the site on chrome on my iphone, I had 13 notifications, and by going to the /notifications page I could view them, but from my iphone could only clear 6 of those 13. It wasn't until I logged into my macbook tonight (specs above) that I was able to clear the remaining 7.

Iphone: iOS 9.3.5, Chrome app 53.0.2785.109

  1. Correct, notifications no longer scroll, only the page you're on scrolls regardless of mouse position, or touch location.

  2. Yes, most notifications are now delyed, often by hours. Email notifications seems near real time, but notifications are often have significant delays.

  3. I've not noticed repeated notifications, fortunately.

Thanks for your time and attention to this, our complaints are ultimately for the better of the site and come with good intentions.

Thank you everyone for your detailed responses. I've created a ticket for our devs and asked for their assistance with this. Your information is very helpful! We appreciate the patience exhibited while we investigate.

Sweet, thanks Jay!
