How do I get the color coding in the workspace editor?

What exactly do you mean? As in colored words when you are coding (for your information, that is generally referred to as "syntax highlighting")?

It should happen automatically. Make sure that the file extension is that of the wanted language. So, if you're coding some css, make sure the file ends with .css, and then the workspace should fix it all up automatically.

I've followed the naming convention for the css document but I don't have the syntax highlighting in my workspace for the css, strangely enough I don't see a color preview of hex code either. Using the latest firefox browser.
