How do I properly use the document.write function

I need to use the document.write function to display what is in the variable player but I do not recall how to do so.

app.js 
var player = 'Jasmine'; 
document.write = (player);
index.html 
<!DOCTYPE HTML>
<html>
<head>
  <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
  <title>JavaScript Basics</title>
</head>
<body>
