how do i use string concatenation so that the final value of userName is "23188XTR#SMITH"?

if its not close to what i have i think im misunderstanding something...

Hey,

you were on the right track. The only problem in your code is that the addition assignment operator should be += instead of =+, so you just switched that! You could also combine the three lines into one so your code is more compact.

var id = "23188xtr";
var lastName = "Smith";

var userName = id.toUpperCase() + "#" + lastName.toUpperCase();

You could also wrap in parentheses to keep it DRYer.

var userName = (id + "#" + lastName).toUpperCase();
