How much is Wix hurting web designers' prospects?

How much is Wix and other similar services hurting web designers' prospects for acquiring work or is it at all?

1 Answer

It's not. Or it shouldn't be. Web designers shouldn't be going after the same clients that feel that Wix or similar website builder software are sufficient for their needs.

A web designers niche is to provide an exceptionally well designed site that meets the clients goals, and because of that level of expertise and attention to detail, you should be charging a premium. More money than someone considering Wix wants to pay. If your potential client mentions the cost of Wix, my response would be "by all means go do Wix. I'm not even going to entertain the idea of competing with their cost".

There are so many thing Wix can't do, or can't do well, and that's the space you want to fill. If you're new, and your portfolio or skill can't demand a premium pay, than work on finding mentors in the same space (twitter, dribbble), and keep practicing, keep building, even if you don't have a client. The more you do, the better you'll be.
