How to define if a variable is some convertible argument

Defining digit as a certain type of variable in an if statement, at it with hours , any help please

squared.py 
# EXAMPLES
# squared(5) would return 25
# squared("2") would return 4
# squared("tim") would return "timtimtim"
def squared(digit):
    try:
        if digit == float:
            return int(digit)**2
        elif digit == "long":
            return int("digit")**2
    except:
        if digit == "String":

Heres another way to do it & this also passed the challenge:

def squared(arg): try: if int(arg): return int(arg) * int(arg) except ValueError: return arg * len(arg)
