How to leave top running and type commands into command line?

I must have missed it but have watched the video twice without finding a solution...here's my question:

When he runs top in tab 2, then "leaves it running" and begins typing commands into the command line, how does he do it? I can't get back to the command line without exiting the program altogether (hitting the "q" key)...?

I didn't watch the video, but ctrl+z will take the foreground application and move it to the background. Use the fg command to return it to the foreground.
