How to look for vowels in a String?

I need to find a vowel or vowels in a word and then delete or remove it from that word.

disemvowel.py
def disemvowel(word):
    vowels = ['a', 'e', 'i', 'o', 'u']
    if vowels.upper() in word or vowels.lower() in word:
        for index, vowel in vowels(vowel, start=0):
            if vowel == word.index(index):
                word.remove(vowel)
    return word

Dear Chastin,

First of all you doesn't need check upper and lower like this. It's enough when you define the vowels = ['a', 'e', 'i', 'o', 'u'] just transform the current letter to lower.

vowels = ["a", "e", "i", "o", "u"]

def disemvowel(word):
    result = list()
    for letter in word:
        if letter.lower() not in vowels:
            result.append(letter)
    return "".join(result)
