I am failing to echo the following string in the if statement: 'Hi, I am Mike'

I am failing to echo the following string in the if statement: 'Hi, I am Mike'?

 // run this code if $name == 'Mike' 
  $name = "Mike";
} else {
$name = 'Hi, I am Mike!';

The first $name = should be different than "Mike" in order for the else statement to show, like this

<?php $name = 'Sam'; if ($name == 'Mike') { // run this code if $name == 'Mike' $name = "Mike"; } else { $name = 'Hi, I am Mike!'; } ?> <pre><?php echo $name?></pre>
