I am not able to solve this challenge, reviewed videos but still lost. Why am I getting does not solve?

def squared(anum):
    try:
        anum = int(anum)
    except ValueError:
        return len(anum) ** 2
    else:
        return int(anum) ** 2
squared.py 
# EXAMPLES
# squared(5) would return 25
# squared("2") would return 4
# squared("tim") would return "timtimtim"
def squared(anum):

Seems to be a running theme, everytime I ask a question in this forum because I can't solve a question, it drives me insane. I have to figure it out.

Seems in my fight, I have solved the challenge myself. 

def squared(anum):
    while True:
        try:
            anum = int(anum)
            return anum * anum
        except ValueError:
            return anum * len(anum)
