The issue is with your first answer, you have
if (stripos($var1,$initial) != 0 && stripos($var2,$initial) != 0)
but you should have
if (stripos($var1,$initial) === 0 && stripos($var2,$initial) === 0)
You need to use triple equals to ensure it evaluates to false. Read more about it here under return values.
After you make this change, your second answer will work.

15,791 PointsThe challenge wants you to evaluate your if conditions using an operator that compares TYPE . stripos returns a boolean false, which equates to 0, if a character isn't found in the expected position.
