I think I am trying the correct thing but I can't seem to get this to work.

How do you finish this?

You need to add the AJAX request at the end, tell it to use the GET method, and point to the footer file.

var request = new XMLHttpRequest();
request.onreadystatechange = function () {
  if (request.readyState === 4) {
    document.getElementById("footer").innerHTML = request.responseText;
  }
};

request.open("GET", "footer.html");
