Here are some reasons: 1) You can not use arrays as function inputs in C, unlike some other languages. But with pointers you can handle the job done. 2) Sometimes you may directly need to access memory locations. 3) It is impossible create Cuda C (nvcc) codes, which are required for high speed parallel applications. etc. etc.
There should be many many more reasons. I'm not an expert, just a newbie, but you "must" learn about pointers for the sake of "efficient programming". Please correct me if I'm wrong.
